“The ‘New Normal’ of the Future” Paved by Inclusive Design

The first in a series of talk events exploring the future of design.
Inclusive design is a design approach developed in collaboration with people who face barriers to social participation or have disabilities that affect their daily lives. We will explore the possibilities and future of product design.
We are pleased to present a conversation between Julia Kassem, a leading expert in inclusive design, and Michio Yokosuka, who is spearheading efforts to explore the potential of inclusive design at Kao, a company that produces a wide range of everyday products.
Inclusive design has been gaining traction primarily in Europe and has recently begun to attract significant attention in Japan as well.
It is an approach that treats users who have been excluded for various reasons—such as disability, age, nationality, ethnicity, or culture (so-called “extreme users”)—as design partners, including them in the design process from the very beginning. It is expected to generate design concepts that could not emerge through existing processes and to create products that are easy for everyone to use.
In this discussion, the two speakers will share their perspectives from their respective professional backgrounds on how they view inclusive design. They will also discuss a wide range of topics, including the ideal form of inclusive design within companies, the lifestyles that inclusive design is likely to create in the future, and their visions for new relationships between “people and things.”
