≪Study Session Overview≫
Associate Professor Hidenori Watanabe from the Faculty of System Design at Tokyo Metropolitan University gave a lecture titled
“Weaving Data to Connect with Society: How to Create a Digital Archive,”
in which he presented examples of high school students involved in digital archive projects,
accompanied by demonstrations.
He introduced the Hiroshima Archive, which uses Google Earth.
Interview articles written by local high school students are mapped alongside photographs of atomic bomb survivors,
and images of the current cityscape are overlaid with photographs from the time of the atomic bombing. By displaying the present and the past together on a map, users can interpret the material from multiple perspectives and deepen their understanding.
Next, he introduced the Nagasaki version.
Using footage featured on television, the presentation showed high school students using their smartphones to compare current and historical footage,
allowing them to experience the horrors of the atomic bombing more vividly and gain a deeper understanding of the subject.
In Nagasaki and Okinawa Prefecture, this curriculum is being proposed as part of peace education classes.
When we first began creating this content, the work was led primarily by teachers and university students, but now local high school students have taken the lead, conducting interviews and even handling the task of mapping the information onto the map. We hope that the creators themselves will become storytellers and pass this legacy on to the next generation.
Although we are currently using Google Earth, we hope that in the future—when these students become the leaders of society—they will use cutting-edge technology to pass these memories on to future generations.
