CANVAS, age 11

Today is CANVAS’s anniversary. We’re now 11 years old. To the children who participate in our
workshops and the adults who support them—and to everyone who has
always been there for us—we’ve received your warm encouragement and energy, which has allowed us to have another
wonderful year.
Thank you so much!

When we celebrated our 10th anniversary last year,
we discussed
all sorts of ideas—like throwing a 10th-anniversary party or updating our website for the first time in nine years—but in the
end, we got swallowed up by the daily hustle and bustle, put our own plans on the back burner, and didn’t manage to make any of them
happen…
Just as I was wondering
why, no matter how many years pass, we remain so disorganized and chaotic, I stumbled upon the transcript of an interview from
CANVAS’s third year. The late Kenji Iino, whom I deeply
admired, had said this:

“I have a feeling CANVAS is going to do really well. A
big part of that is something I can’t quite put into words—it’s the flexibility, the potential for growth, and the fact that it’s still a bit immature
in a good way. What matters is how much of that indescribable atmosphere and conversation exists within a
team, and I think CANVAS will still be immature
even five or ten years from now. It’s great that there are so many areas where we’re still developing. There are still a mountain of things we
can do and things we need to do. I think
that’s the most important thing.”

Yes, even after 11 years, I’m still as inexperienced as Mr. Iino predicted, but I hope you’ll
all continue to support me!

Looking ahead to the next 10 years—I
hope to make these 10 dream projects a reality!
