≪Steering Committee≫

The 10th subcommittee meeting was held on April 18.
At this meeting, Mr. Toshiyuki Seki of Shogakukan led a Q&A session regarding “TV Dora-Zemi,” which has been in operation since April of this year.

The concept of “Living Room Learning”—which has been central to the project since its inception—
—the idea of children studying while watching TV in the living room—
has received positive feedback. Furthermore, regarding Living Room Learning,
a survey conducted by Shogakukan and Hama Gakuen shows that students who study in the living room
achieve better grades and standardized test scores than those who study in their own rooms.
Furthermore, TV Dora-Zemi uses an LMS (Learning Management System)
to allow parents to view their children’s video viewing history. Shogakukan believes that learning via television is effective, particularly since the most important goal is to establish good study habits in the early grades.
Regarding TV Dora Zemi’s position in relation to public and private education, we were told that Shogakukan’s founding philosophy is to contribute to the education of Japanese elementary school students through publishing, and that the company takes the stance that contributing to the enrichment of home education and private education leads to a broader contribution to compulsory education in Japan as a whole.
As a pioneer in the large-scale introduction of ICT into home education, I found it extremely interesting to see how “TV Dora-Zemi” will
develop in the future.
