I spoke at Musashino Art University’s “Ichigaya Innovation Days 2025: A Participatory Future.”

The theme is “Designing a Social Model for Dyslexia.”

Based on the findings of the MyType Project—a collaboration between Musashino University, Morisawa, Concent, and Tokyo University of Science aimed at designing individually optimized fonts—we discussed the future of dyslexia and neurodiversity.

MyType is a project that is also participating in our neurodiversity exhibition, “The World in Our Minds.”

With about 8% of elementary school students said to have dyslexia, that means 2 to 3 students in a class of 30.

What makes this project so great is that,

It clearly demonstrated that reading difficulties should not be treated as a problem with the child’s abilities, but rather that changing the environment can significantly transform the learning experience.

I believe this success lies in the fact that the individuals involved, faculty and staff, font manufacturers, design firms, and universities collaborated to create a model case for product development based on the premise of cognitive diversity.

I believe that providing one device per student is the “infrastructure for individually optimized learning—that is, reasonable accommodations.” Building on that, I’d like to create a world where children themselves can choose the reading settings—such as fonts, line spacing, and background colors—that work best for them.

It is a future where reasonable accommodations are not considered “special support,” but rather become a standard feature available to all children.

Through our neurodiversity initiatives,

Expand the options available to each individual so they can reach their full potential in their own way, and

I want to create a new norm while questioning what we’ve always taken for granted.

Until now, fonts were something that were simply “given” to us, but we’re now entering an era where we can choose the fonts that suit us best.

May such a future become the norm.
