- Matsuya Ginza: “Tsu-tsu-mu Exhibition: The Art of Design That Gently Connects the World”
Matsuya Ginza’s 100th Anniversary Exhibition: “Tsu-tsu-mu Exhibition: The Art of Design That Gently Connects the World.”
An exhibition featuring interpretations of the theme “enveloping” drawn from diverse fields such as nature, daily life, and architecture. I stopped by before the Matsuya Board of Directors meeting.
The word “wrap” holds a mysterious gentleness. It is neither about closing nor separating, but rather gently drawing close and softly connecting the inside and the outside.
As you walk through the exhibition, you begin to see how the spirit of care—the thoughtfulness and consideration inherent in the act of “wrapping”—can take shape.
A pocket money envelope is a clever way to convey your feelings through a single sheet of paper.
The Help Mark is an expression of kindness that wraps invisible voices in a symbol.
Matsuya Ginza’s wrapping paper transforms respect for the recipient into design, while its curtains create a scene while maintaining a sense of distance.
Light fixtures that wrap light in washi paper soften glare and infuse the space with warmth, while kaishi and origata convey the culture of “wrapping”—a way of gently conveying courtesy and thoughtfulness.
All of these acts of “enveloping” stem from the way we look at others.
A gesture that shows consideration for the other person's perspective and an effort to stay connected while maintaining a distance.
The “Tsu-tsu-mu Exhibition” quietly taught me that wrapping is a form of compassion—a gentle design that bridges divisions and connects people.
It's on until the 13th! Don't miss it ^^
