[Report] Part 1 of the 107th Session: “Toward a Society That Understands, Supports, and Nurtures Exceptional Talents”

On November 30, 2022, Learning of Tomorrow hosted an online symposium featuring Masaya Iwanaga, President of the Open University of Japan.

Interest is growing in “gifted education,” which focuses on nurturing the unique abilities of individual children. With that in mind, we spoke with Mr. Iwanaga, chair of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Expert Panel on Guidance and Support in Schools for Students with Exceptional Talents in Specific Fields,” about the importance of gifted education and initiatives to enhance it in Japan.

In the first half of the symposium, the speaker explained the different types of gifted education—specifically, the “early advanced” model, which has garnered significant attention in Japan, as well as the “enrichment” and “2E” models—and discussed the challenges facing gifted education in Japan.
