"STEAM Workshop: Build Your Own Factory and Become the Manager of the Kawasaki Plant! Part 1" (Elementary and Middle School Students) in Takeshiba

We held the first "Let's Learn About Factory Systems!" event!

(This series is a program jointly developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. and CANVAS. It consists of six sessions in total: the first half, “Let’s Design Our Own Factory!” and the second half, “Let’s Create Movements for Robots Working in the Factory!”)
What kind of robots work in factories?
What kind of sensors would allow us to pack efficiently and inspect products accurately?
Through role-playing and discussions, let’s experience factory systems firsthand.
Let's think it through.
■What Is a Robot?
If someone asks me,
Roomba, Doraemon, Terminator, Pepper, food-serving robots…
As the conversation moved along at a brisk pace, I suddenly realized…
"I wonder if this is a robot. We have an oven at home called 'Healthio,' and it can cook meals for us with just the push of a button, too."
"That's true. So, can we say that a computer is a robot?"
Your mind naturally drifts from "for example" to "definition."
■Non-Industrial Robots and Industrial Robots

All of the robots created by the participants are non-industrial robots designed to provide services to people.
In this article, we'll take a closer look at industrial robots used in manufacturing.

For example, let's imagine the journey these treats take before they reach everyone's hands.

I wonder what kinds of robots are out there and what roles they play.
■Sensors vs. Arm Robots!!???

From here on, we'll assign roles to each person and do a role-playing exercise to recreate the factory environment.
Arm robots and conveyor belts don't have eyes. So, anyone other than the sensors and cameras has to wear a blindfold.
Will we actually be able to sort the items according to the order form? Will we be able to get everything ready for shipment without a hitch??
"Wow~~~ The candy just keeps coming~~~"
"Yes! Right there! Now! Catch it!"
"Huh?? What? Where is it~~~!"
"Aaaah… my arms, my arms… I'm so tired, they hurt. I can't do this anymore~~~~"
It can be quite difficult to give instructions in a way that the other person understands, or,
Repeating the same movements over and over is really tough…
To make this more efficient, where should we place sensors, and what kinds should we use?
Finally,
"What are everyone's dreams? Is there a job you'd like to try? If you were to work alongside robots there, what kind of image comes to mind?"
Each of us expressed that in a drawing.

Next month's theme is "Let's Build a Factory System!"
Using 3D models and layout sheets, we’ll design the conveyor layout and determine where to place each robot to create an efficient factory system.
I look forward to seeing you again.
