A survey by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology found that the number of elementary and junior high school students who were absent from school in fiscal year 2020 reached 196,127—a record high.In a separate survey of the students themselves conducted in parallel with this study, the most common reasons cited were “not getting along with teachers” (30%) and “bullying” (25%), suggesting that factors related to the school play a significant role.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Tamaki Saito, a leading expert on “hikikomori” and a member of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Advisory Committee on Research into School Refusal, to discuss the reasons behind the continuing rise in school refusal and what measures are needed now to support these children. We hope you will join us.
