Sunday, August 15: We held the workshop “Launch a Rocket Powered by Vegetable Enzymes!” (Program provided by Professor Black Lab).

In August 2021, we hosted a science program featuring Professor Black Lab—a former university professor and comedian—as our guest instructor!

Do vegetables turn into rockets? What's a rocket? Are we going to space?
Do vegetables fly??
Well, this time we're going to conduct an experiment using the power of vegetables.
■Vegetables that produce a lot of oxygen… ?
After watching Professor Black Lab's skit… (Everyone was rolling with laughter…!)
We're going to conduct an experiment to see what happens when we use vegetables and hydrogen peroxide—which serves as fuel—to launch a rocket.
According to Professor Black Lab, vegetables and hydrogen peroxide should produce oxygen.
Once oxygen is produced, the rubber glove placed in the cup will inflate…
The Glove Alien is coming to life! Or so I hope!?

Which vegetable produces the most oxygen?
We will work together as a group to conduct the experiment.
Some Glove Aliens are big, while others just won't inflate.
Thanks to the experiments conducted by all the researchers, we were able to obtain a variety of results!
■Rocket Launch!

Next, we'll finally build a rocket and launch it.
How high can we fly from Earth? Let's conduct an experiment.
While also recalling the experiment with the Glove Alien from earlier,
Pick your vegetables and place them on the launcher one by one!
The wait… My heart's racing.
Pop!!! Wow! It flew!
It won't fly at all~~!
I'll make a note of this… What vegetable should I use next? How much should I add?
We'll keep repeating the experiments while making predictions.
What will we see??
■ Various Predictions and Results

Which one produces the most enzymes: carrots? Shimeji mushrooms? Daikon radish?
We asked the team that launched the rocket the highest for their tips on the experiment.
Boiled carrots don't fly very far.
Is that because the enzyme catalase was destroyed by heat?
I tried adding some fresh grated vegetables partway through, and it flew really high…!?
Does that mean the enzymes break down if you wait too long after grating it?
If I don't eat it while it's fresh, will it lose its nutrients?
Working in pairs, we conducted experiments and went through a series of trials and errors.
