We welcomed two special guests for these two days: Sari Sasaki (Sali), a visual designer, writer, researcher, and former UNESCO staff member based in southern France, and Ikuko Matsuo (Ms. Ikuchan), who has held exhibitions and workshops both in Japan and abroad and has visited our research institute on numerous occasions.

Sali is joining us online from her home in France!

While sensing the connection between "color" and "nature," and the connection between "people" and "nature,"

Using a surprise kit that arrived from France, I created my own "writing tools" and "paints" and used them to draw.

[Day 1]

■Surprise Kit From France

The materials for this workshop that Sali sent from southern France

It starts with everyone opening the “Surprise Kit” together.

What was inside…?

■Drawing Tools "writing tools"

What should I use, and how, to make them "writing tools"?

We’ll choose materials from a desk cluttered with a jumble of items from France and Japan to make our creations.

What is this?

It smells great! (Maybe it's French herbs?)

How much should I use?

Thinking it over, choosing, making, then choosing again…

"Writing tools" of all shapes and sizes.

[Day 2]

■Creating Colors

On the second day, we'll make paint using the "natural pigments" lined up in a row at FACTORY.

First, Sali showed us a video introducing the place where Natural Pigment came from.

What color do you see?

Some kids said, “Brown, ochre, and the green of the trees! The blue of the sky!”

The color of this soil. This becomes color. It becomes paint.

Are the paints, materials, and methods the same as what you usually use? Or are they different?

How can you create different colors? Want to try making your favorite color?

Some kids even say, “I want to make blue!”

■Drawing ⇔ Creating Colors

When the palette is filled with all kinds of colors…

Let's all try drawing on one big sheet of paper using our hands or our own writing tools.

Your colors, the shapes you draw, and the marks you make will all blend together on the paper.

Writing tools and colors I made myself.

Was there any difference in how it felt to use compared to what you usually use? Which one do you prefer?

Were you able to create your favorite color? Was blue a bit tricky?

The paints I usually use come in blue and a variety of other colors.

Is it difficult to create blue with the natural pigments I used this time?

I wonder why that is?

■Workshop Photo Essay: From Sali

We've received a photo essay of this workshop from Sali!

Be sure to check this out as well.
