[Event Report] “Security Challenges and Countermeasures in the Era of the GIGA School Initiative”

We spoke with Mr. Uchiyama and Mr. Imada of Digital Arts, the company behind the “i-FILTER” filtering software, about “Security Challenges and Countermeasures in the Era of the GIGA School Initiative.”

While filtering is important, it serves no purpose if it blocks access to information necessary for learning. That’s why “i-FILTER” allows for detailed configuration, aiming to provide filtering that balances safety measures with convenience. That said, since detailed configuration can place a heavy burden on schools, a standard filtering option is provided. While one might wonder about the criteria used to create this standard, Digital Arts states that it is optimized through daily updates based on the know-how and data the company has accumulated over the past 23 years. Currently, it is reported that 30 percent of school boards have not implemented paid filtering services.

Some viewers suggested, “Shouldn’t we enable children to make their own judgments regarding the code of conduct for ICT use?” However, just as children start by practicing on a bike with training wheels, it’s important to provide support through filtering while fostering the digital literacy they need to ultimately use technology appropriately on their own.

In our efforts to promote the use of mobile phone filtering, we encountered the problem of children disabling the filters in order to use social media; however, I also felt it was important to take their wishes into account.
