[Report] “Hide-and-Seek with Sound Through Electronics”

From a CANVAS Facebook post

*******************************************

On March 20, we held an electronics workshop (program provided by Kazuyasu Komiya)!

Is it a sound game of hide-and-seek? Or an electronics project?

Today, we're going to try something a little different from our usual crafts—a project that uses electricity and electronic components, and incorporates sound!

■What Is Sound?

What can you hear? TV sounds, music, voices… there are all kinds of things, aren't there?

So why can we hear sounds?

Why can I hear the voice on the phone?

When I touch my throat while making a sound… Hmm? Is it kind of trembling? I can feel it in my hand!

While playing with string telephones… we all explored the world of sound together.

It goes without saying that we can hear sounds, but,

Actually, it might be a little strange.

■Hide-and-Seek with Sounds!?

This time, we looked for sounds hidden inside the research lab and had everyone else hide some too.

Electronics components I used to explore sound.

It's a light-based string phone…!

Instead of the string used in a string telephone, this device uses light to transmit sound.

It's a little strange…

All sorts of things at the research lab…

If objects could talk, what do you think they would say?

I imagined the objects chatting and recorded it.

Searching for that conversation using the thread phone of light…

We played a game of "Sound Hide-and-Seek"!

The straw hat chatters, "It's hot~" and "Wheat, wheat, wheat…"

The chair is saying, “This is heavy~ Get up already~”

The sound of disposable chopsticks clacking together is “Snap!!”

It felt as if the voices of all sorts of things were coming through, creating a lively commotion!

Thank you for the past year and two months!!

Let's meet again someday!
