CANVAS’s corporate identity is a new system in which everything is designed as a “tool.” We want everyone to feel free to use these tools to create a wide variety of logos. With that hope in mind, we’ve adopted “A Toolbox for Creating the Future” as CANVAS’s corporate identity. We’ll also use this toolbox to create many “CANVAS” logos.

This CI has three key features.

Feature 1:

We treated the CI logo itself as a “tool” for children to use, placed it inside the toolbox, and made it available for everyone to use freely.CANVAS is a “secret base for play and learning.” We wanted the logo itself to embody playfulness and creativity. Opening the toolbox is the moment when you “create” something. And “creating” means moving toward the “future.” We hope that opening the CANVAS toolbox will lead to the creation of the future.

Feature 2:

Everything is made up of “circles,” “triangles,” and “squares.” Everything is made up of “circles,” “triangles,” and “squares.” By combining these simple shapes, we can make scissors, glue, pencils, compasses, and even soldering irons. That’s how the tools in the toolbox were made.

Feature 3:

Everything is composed of the three primary colors. Everything is composed of the three primary colors: “red,” “blue,” and “yellow.” However, we can create a wide variety of colors from these three.

There are three ideas behind this CI.

Thought 1:

Endless Possibilities: The “tools” and “materials” created through combinations of “shapes” and “colors” are infinite. The works produced using these tools and materials are also infinite. We want to endlessly expand the creative possibilities for the future, limited only by each individual’s ideas. We designed this logo system to embody that vision. We hope that children will use their own ideas, their hands and feet, and the CANVAS tool freely to play, learn, and create something new.

Thought 2:

A CI Created by Everyone: Because CANVAS places such importance on “creating,” we want everyone to help design our logo. We hope that the children participating in the workshop will each design their own version of the CANVAS logo—and their own personal logos as well. Of course, there isn’t just one CANVAS logo.

Thought 3:

I want the CI to serve as a supporting pillar for CANVAS. The children are the stars of CANVAS’s activities. And the adults from industry, government, and academia across the country are the ones who support the children’s activities. From its inception, CANVAS has aspired to play that supporting role. We want to prepare a spacious playground, bring in play equipment, gather friends, and pay close attention so that everyone can participate joyfully and earnestly. That is the role we wish to fulfill. The new CI was also designed to support activities nationwide. Therefore, we made the CI open source, creating a “CI for everyone to use.” We hope that people across the country who are struggling to create brochures, websites, or physical spaces to promote their activities will use the materials in this “toolbox” to design with joy. We hope to contribute to the growth of creative activities among children throughout Japan. And we hope that through this toolbox, many people will connect with one another, giving rise to new collaborations. We, too, are looking forward to seeing what kinds of creations will emerge across the country.
