NHK Central Broadcasting Program Council

At today’s NHK Central Programming Council meeting, I presented a proposal—using the program “Friday Morning School” as an example—asking whether NHK could take the lead in creating a platform for video content that can be used in education.
In Australia, there is a video streaming service called EnhanceTV that specializes in education. In addition to allowing users to watch content from all broadcasters, it enables teachers to edit archived videos and share them with students, and it also provides related workbooks and other materials. Due to the impact of the
pandemic, I’ve heard that similar educational video platforms in Germany and France have also been significantly expanded since last month. We’ve been discussing within the Learning of Tomorrow Association for some time whether we could build
such a platform, but since “NHK for School” is already absolutely outstanding, having NHK serve as the platform is the most direct route. How about creating a platform that curates and features not only NHK programs but also high-quality content from commercial broadcasters, YouTube, and other online sources? I believe that could become the platform for digital education in the future.

I also asked them to produce a series of special programs depicting this “new normal” society!
Although the term “new normal” has been coined, no one has really been able to paint a clear picture of what that world will look like. What kind of society will it be? What kind of lifestyle will we lead? What will happen to politics, government, healthcare, education… and our cities?
How will people work in this “new normal” society? What kind of lives will people lead? How will they communicate? What kinds of sports will they play? How will they enjoy music?
That’s my request—I really hope they’ll turn this into a series. I don’t think the Programming
Council is really the place to make proposals… but I just can’t help myself.
