This is the story of our programming education initiative in Sumida Ward,
which we’ve been working on for five years since 2015. It features an interview with Atsuo-kun and Dobashi-san from CANVAS.
It all began
when we were invited by the Sumida Ward teachers’ community to visit,
and we started with one-time workshops. From there, we moved on to introducing the program into schools. In the first year, the program was implemented as an after-school club activity; the following year, it was introduced during “Integrated Learning” periods; and the year after that, it was gradually expanded to other academic subjects. This apparently gained a positive reputation within the ward, leading to the organization of training sessions that involved other schools in Sumida Ward.
Sumida Elementary School was designated as a model school for ICT utilization in Sumida Ward, and Mr. Nishinaka, the teacher in charge, served as a research instructor at other schools in the ward; the school was subsequently selected as a model school by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government as well.
The five-year implementation process was carried out as part of our collaboration with Salesforce to “create examples of autonomous and sustainable adoption in schools and communities.” We received various forms of support from Salesforce, including the loan of equipment and the dispatch of employee volunteers.
