- Amakusa, Sakitsu Village
The Sakitsu Settlement in Amakusa, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2018. A church stands in the heart of this fishing village.
This is a place where, even during the more than 250-year period of religious persecution, hidden Christians secretly maintained their Christian faith and cultivated a unique form of Christianity while coexisting with Buddhism and Shinto.
The villagers developed a unique religious culture characteristic of a fishing village, such as venerating the patterns inside abalone shells as representations of the Virgin Mary.
Sakitsu Church was built on the site where “e-fumi” (the trampling of religious images) once took place. The tatami mats laid inside the church also symbolize this cultural coexistence.
If you climb the 500 steps from Sakitsu Suwa Shrine, you can overlook the entire village. I pushed through the downpour—it was like a tropical storm—and ran all the way up!
I also made sure to try the “Sugi Yokan,” a sweet said to be sold only here (*^^*)
