From a CANVAS Facebook post

*******************************************

In collaboration with Iwate Prefecture, the Iwate Prefectural Industrial Center, and Takizawa City, we held a mentor training workshop as part of the “Programming for ALL” initiative, with support from Microsoft.

Participants in the workshop included professionals working in the local community, particularly those from IT companies.CANVAS Fellow Ms. Amanuma of codeMo also participated as an instructor.

On the first day, we spent two hours learning about the teaching materials and how to provide supportive guidance to children as they experience programming. The activities we conducted included “Grid Programming,” one of the unplugged teaching materials, and “Hour of Code.”

In the afternoon, the workshop participants led sessions for the children. Even when using the same materials, each child’s way of thinking and approach varied. After the workshops, everyone shared ideas on what kinds of questions to ask to support the children’s independent activities.

On the second day, we held two workshops, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The mentors also gave lectures to the group teachers on how to conduct “Grid Programming” and “Hour of Code.”

The children’s surveys were full of comments like “It was fun!” and “It was hard but interesting!”—many expressed a desire to participate again. In the surveys from the mentors, we also received feedback expressing a desire to continue supporting the children as mentors in the future.

In Iwate Prefecture, the Industrial Promotion Center and codeMo will serve as hubs, and we plan to continue implementing programming education moving forward. CANVAS will also continue to provide support!
