Steering Committee of the Future Learning Consortium.
I’m relieved to see that things have gotten off to a smooth start.
I hope the committee will continue to make steady progress toward 2020.
Today, we received a presentation on the results of a survey regarding the current status of programming education initiatives.
Although the response rate was 42%, approximately 43% of school boards have already begun some form of action.
As the disparity in ICT infrastructure development widens among local governments, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has published the status and rankings of infrastructure development by prefecture and by city, ward, town, and village. I believe it would be beneficial to increasingly publish the actual status of programming education as well.
Ideally, it would be best to launch the initiative simultaneously and equally across the nation; however, given the current reality where disparities are already widening, I believe there is merit in publicly disclosing the status and leveraging those disparities to drive progress.
Furthermore, I believe it is crucial for municipalities that introduced the program early to achieve results and gain recognition.
Furthermore, questions frequently arise regarding the number of class hours, the subjects in which programming is taught, and whether computers are used. I believe that including survey items in the next report to capture these actual conditions would provide a useful benchmark for schools just starting out.
