"How The Platypus Was Made" by Kiwa Digital
At an elementary school in Australia, children learned about the language and culture unique to their local area by creating Digital Ehon books.
The theme of the Digital Ehon they created was “How the Platypus Came to Be,” a folktale passed down through generations by the Urunjerri people, who have lived in the area since ancient times.
The children invited elders to their school to hear about the local culture and folktales.
They then created illustrations for the folktale and recorded narration in both the local language, Woiuran, and English. The Digital Ehon created by the children and displayed in
this section has been distributed worldwide, introducing the region’s culture to people all over the globe.
A traditional story from the Wurundjeri people, the Traditional Owners of the Melbourne area in Australia, about the origin of the platypus. In December 2014, KIWA, in collaboration with the Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for Languages, brought the 48HR SLAM to Thornbury Primary School in Melbourne, Australia. The students participated in an intensive two-day digital storytelling workshop aimed at helping to revitalize the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people. This culminated in a digital story told through striking artwork and narrated in the students’ own voices. The KIWA team then took this amazing work and compiled it into an interactive digital book.
