The other day, I went to observe classes at Miyagi University of Education Junior High School.
This school is implementing a variety of practical initiatives as part of its “Technology and Information” curriculum, which features programming as one of its core pillars.

We are currently working on creating apps using MIT App Inventor. Our
ultimate goal is to complete an app that we can actually use on our field trip, and right now we’re in the process of learning various features one by one through hands-on programming, such as timers and voice input.

Going forward, they will brainstorm ideas for how to use the app’s features in various situations—such as while riding trains or buses—and then create original apps in small groups.

The class was conducted in pairs, with one student actually doing the programming while the other provided explanations and support. We saw many
pairs actively discussing the material as they worked together.

To all the students who used Scratch last year:
Teachers and instructors have created learning materials to support independent learning, such as a compatibility chart for AppInventor and Scratch scripts.

On Friday, November 6, we’ll be holding an open class where you can actually see what these lessons are like!
If you’re interested or have time, please stop by.
