[Kids Creative Lab at the University of Tokyo, Hongo Campus]
September 20: Kids Creative Lab at the University of Tokyo!
This month, we held the art program “Making Sticks and Houses” and “Letter Sticks: Stick Figures and…?” (provided by the Fukasawa Art Institute), in which participants created three-dimensional artworks from two-dimensional materials.
The materials are flyers and newspaper cut into squares. We’ll roll them up into sticks to use as materials for the projects we’re about to make.
We’ll keep making them until each tray is full—then the preschoolers will try their hand at building houses, while the elementary school students will try their hand at creating stick figures and the worlds around them!
It was impressive to see how they found joy in various aspects of the creative process—carefully collecting each beautiful purple flyer to make sticks, or coming up with quick ways to roll them into balls. All the materials
used were things you can easily find at home. Many children left, saying to their parents, “Let’s do this at home!”
It makes me so happy that the feelings of “That’s interesting!” and “I wonder why?”—which the kids experience at the lab—continue even outside the lab.
To all the kids who told me, “I’ll show you what I made next month!”—I’m really looking forward to it!
