[Kids Creative Lab: Atelier BAUHAUS] —
What is this hole? What’s on the other side of it?—
The theme for Saturday, May 23, was “Holes.” We created
holes of various shapes and imagined what kind of world lay on the other side of
each one, working together to build a space that felt like an interactive pop-up book
.
As we looked at the slides and discussed
—"Do you think this is a hole? Or not?
" and "Why do you think it's a hole?"
—and everyone talked about it together,
It was interesting to note that opinions were divided: some said a closed door is a “hole” while an
open door is not; and that
glasses
are
not a “hole” because they have lenses. Opinions on what constitutes a “hole”—such as whether a loud bang is a “hole” or not—were split, and many preschoolers and elementary school students agreed that anything that allows
something to pass through or where you can’t see what’s ahead counts as a “hole.”
Even when someone had a different opinion,
instead of dismissing it, we’d say, “Oh, I see,” and set it aside for the time being—but we still held onto
our own views and spoke up. It was really great to have that time to think things through together
.
I’d love to create more opportunities like this to share everyone’s thoughts and feelings and broaden our perspectives.
The children who came with their siblings are now seated farther apart
, and one boy’s drawings have started to take on a much gentler tone;
the children are beginning to get used to the environment, and we’re starting to see small changes here and there.
I hope to continue having all kinds of conversations with everyone.
