<Kyoyo Elementary School’s Raspberry Pi activities have begun for the 2015 school year>
At Shinagawa City Kyoyo Elementary School, where Raspberry Pi devices have been distributed to all students since last school year, classes utilizing the Raspberry Pi will continue in the new school year. This time, a demonstration lesson led by Mr. Nishishita of Kyoyo Elementary School and a workshop featuring Mr. Abe were held for the entire teaching staff, including teachers who were newly assigned to the school this school year.
The mock lesson involved writing a program to guide a car displayed on the Scratch stage into a garage located at a different spot. The program was designed so that clicking the start button would return the car to its starting point, allowing students to experience various processes involved in problem-solving, such as communicating with one another and trial and error.
They formed teams of three—comprising both teachers with Scratch experience and those new to it—and worked together to tackle the challenges. They created a variety of projects: some didn’t
just park the car in the garage but also added engine sounds; others had the car say a line when the task was successful, or transform into a dragon when it failed. Finally, they presented their projects.
At Kyoyo Elementary School, teachers take the lead in designing lesson plans and creating the Scratch programs used in class. The content of
this demonstration lesson and the Scratch program prepared for it were both created by Mr. Nishishita, who has been using Raspberry Pi in his classes since last year. The
demonstration lesson was a huge success.
We can’t take our eyes off the Raspberry Pi-based initiatives at Kyoyo Elementary School, which have finally kicked off for this school year.
