Yesterday, as part of the Benesse 60th Anniversary celebrations, Mitchell Resnick, the creator of Scratch, gave a lecture at the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation.

Mr. Resnick discussed “making” and “coding” as recent global movements, and shared various insights on what Scratch can do and the role it plays in a world where new technologies are spreading and the range of things people create is expanding.
Believing that “the best learning experiences arise when you create something,” Resnick emphasized that the goal is not simply to learn programming, but rather to experience thinking through programming, to explore how programming relates to one’s areas of interest, to share creations and ideas, and to learn “programming for learning.”

As a message to the adults who create such learning environments, Ms. Resnick emphasized the importance of the four “Ps”:
“projects, peers, play, and passion.” It was a time that reaffirmed my belief that, in order to foster creative thinking through programming, it is essential to provide an environment where children can create anything they want,
and that they need the guidance and support of adults as they develop projects based on their own interests.
