[Kids Creative Lab]
On March 15, the Kids Creative Lab held a workshop at the University of Tokyo’s Hongo Campus, where participants created art by connecting
straws.
The children in the preschool class are creating various shapes by taking advantage of the straw’s ability to stretch, shrink, and bend. Some have made object-like creations by connecting
several straws together, while others have carefully arranged and glued straws to create pieces that could be hung on the wall.
In the elementary school class, students create freestanding three-dimensional artworks using “tower” as the theme. To ensure a tower stands firmly, it’s important to build a solid foundation at its base. The children created their own unique towers, including ones so tall they had to stand on a chair and stretch to reach them, sturdy and stable towers designed with careful consideration of their center of gravity, and visually interesting towers made by stacking triangular pyramids.
Not only do they create their own work, but they’re also interested in what others have created, and they take the time to point out the good aspects and put them into words.
I think that’s a truly wonderful quality everyone here shares.
The final class for the 2014 Kids Creative Lab at the University of Tokyo’s Hongo Campus was held in March.
Thank you to all our young researchers for this past year!
Going forward, whether at home, at school, at kindergarten or daycare, or even out on the street…
Please keep exploring the things you love, find interesting, or think are mysterious—in your own unique way.
We look forward to seeing you again somewhere!
