On Sunday, October 12, the workshop held at Meiji University featured the theme "The World of Stripes" for the preschool class and
"The World of Patterns" for the elementary school class.
In the preschool class, after
we talked about how drawing lots of lines creates “stripes,” the children used various materials to make their own stripes.Blinds, floor patterns, crosswalks, railroad tracks… the children pointed out so many “stripes”
in their everyday surroundings.
The floor where they were sitting, the desks, and the walls—everything was filled with the stripes they created, resulting in a
magnificent “world of stripes.”
In the elementary school class, the students designed their own patterns.
When we were looking at various patterns together and showed
them a houndstooth pattern, one child said, “It looks like someone doing a ‘banzai’!”
and everyone mimicked the pattern by raising their arms in a “banzai” gesture!
It always brings me joy to see the children interpret things in such creative ways.
After that, they designed their own patterned socks.
Some children agonized over their designs, others chatted while working,
and still others worked silently, as if in conversation with the materials…
The patterns that emerged from these varied processes were all so beautiful that I found myself thinking
, “If they sold these, I’d definitely want a pair.” The class produced a wealth of unique,
one-of-a-kind patterns.
