<Programming × Japanese Language Class!>
The other day, a Japanese language class incorporating
Raspberry Pi was held at Shinagawa City Kyoyo Elementary School, where Raspberry Pi devices have recently been distributed to all students.
In this class, students used the words of a tanka poem to imagine a scene and then created a video using Scratch. They selected “colors,” “photos,” and “sounds” that evoked the image of the
tanka, and while experimenting with the timing of the sounds and
the order of the photos through programming, they each created their own unique videos.
On the day we visited, the students were presenting the works they had created so far. Even though they were all tanka poems,
each student’s imagined colors and combinations of photographs were unique. As friends shared the scenes they had envisioned from the tanka,
it became an opportunity for them to discover the beauty of each other’s new creations.
I sensed the potential for programming to become a tool for self-expression for children.
Please continue to follow the initiatives at Kyoyo Elementary School!
