[After-School Creative Project] To help make after-school time a fulfilling experience for children in
after-school programs,
CANVAS staff continue to hold workshops at numerous after-school programs and children’s centers.
On Wednesday, October 1, the children at the Nakano Shinmei After-School Club made “art projects” out of clay.
The children put their minds and hands to work, thinking hard about how to create exactly what they wanted.
I saw many children thinking and experimenting—saying things like, “I need a little more red,
” or “Let’s try mixing these four colors”
—as they worked to create the colors they wanted.
The girl who created the three-dimensional, undulating "leaf" said she made it while
thinking about the leaves she sees on the street she walks down every day.
Even when given the same theme, the colors and shapes that result are as unique as the people themselves. The
creative process is different for everyone, too.
