<How to Make a “Scratch Orchestra”>
“Scratch Orchestra” was a workshop held at Scratch@MIT.The system works by loading
recorded sounds onto a Raspberry Pi, then connecting switches—made from cardboard covered with aluminum foil by the Harada Lab at Hakodate Future University—to the NanoBoard’s resistance sensors.
This setup plays back the recorded sounds.This workshop program, where participants build instruments out of
large cardboard boxes and create a variety of musical performances, is enjoyable for both adults and children alike. (The workshop was organized primarily by Professor Miyata of Chukyo University, Professor Harada of Hakodate Future University, and Professor Ueda of Doshisha Women’s College of Liberal Arts.
)
After we featured it on our Facebook page last week, it became a huge hit! So, we spoke further with Professor Miyata, who led the workshop.
This “Scratch Orchestra” workshop program was based on a model developed through research at the “World Museum,” which is directed by Professor Miyata.
The workshop’s concept is “Dance to Code, Code to Dance,” which involves converting body movements into sound and using that sound to create a performance. Regarding the learning process through the
workshop, Professor Miyata explained, “I proposed the ‘4S Model’—School, Studio, Stage, and Street—and structured the program so that participants moved from learning through creation to, ultimately, learning through expression in public spaces.As Professor Miyata explained, “This is a model that creates a cycle of learning—not just by learning
oneself, but by expressing what one has learned to others and, in turn, inspiring others to learn.” True to this philosophy, the presentation—the “expression” following the workshop—was a huge success!
