“Future Learning Consortium” Steering Committee

Today, the steering committee meeting for the “Future Learning Consortium”—a framework for promoting programming education established by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC), and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI)—was held online. It seems attendance rates are actually higher when meetings are held
online (*^^*) Professor Osamu Sudo and Professor Ken Sakamura, both of whom were my mentors during my time at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, were also in attendance today. Since this was an
informal meeting, I’ll refrain from taking detailed notes, but the discussion primarily focused on fundamental educational reforms in preparation for the post-COVID era.It was pointed out that there are skeptical and critical voices in the media regarding
programming education, but there are very few countries that can implement such a program simultaneously nationwide as we have done. I tell the media outlets that contact
me that, rather than being critical, I hope they will call on society as a whole to support this initiative.
