A programming-based lesson at Owada Elementary School. Next, we visited a third-grade classroom. As part of their
art class, the students are creating a story to introduce the characters they worked hard to make using saws.

First, spend 15 minutes drawing pictures of four different scenes, then write down what happens in each one to create a story outline. The
concept and theme are “kindness.” What kind of heartwarming stories do everyone’s characters have?

Once they’ve sketched out the scenes, they discuss them in small groups. Everyone takes turns reading their story aloud, learning from others’ ideas, offering each other advice, and further developing their concepts.
“Should we use speech bubbles to represent musical notes?” “I want to show that the character is struggling here, so I’d like to use this kind of expression!” Everyone works earnestly to fine-tune the story’s details.
They also draw the other characters that appear in the story, and in the next session, they’ll finally use programming to bring them to life as animations.
