On Sunday, June 21, the Kids Creative Lab at the University of Tokyo, Hongo Campus, held a music play program featuring two instructors from “Oto no Terakoya,” a group that creates “Sound Circus” performances with children.

When Mayu and Kimiya appeared, playing the accordion and violin respectively, the children listened intently to their beautiful tones.

Have you ever heard of “onomatopoeia”?
Woof-woof, yelp-yelp, thump-thump, knock-knock… Let’s all try saying the various sounds we hear nearby—onomatopoeia—out loud, drawing lines to represent the sounds we hear, and expressing them with our bodies.
After experiencing various sounds inside the room, we’ll head outside to search for more sounds.
“Bzzzz,” “Thud,” “Snap,” “Scrape,” “Splash,” “Whoosh”
If you listen with your whole body, you’ll hear all sorts of sounds.

Mayu and Kimiya turned the sounds we collected into an impromptu song.
While singing, we all came up with movements together, and at the end, we performed for our families.

During the break, I noticed a child who had just drunk some water say, “That sounds like ‘gulp, gulp,’” and another child washing their hands in the restroom while saying, “Whoosh—.”
I feel that this workshop served as an opportunity for everyone to view the casual moments of their daily lives from a slightly different perspective and to find joy in them.

Even as an adult, when I’m walking outside or riding the train,
I find myself thinking, “I’d like to take off my earbuds and listen to the sounds all around me.”
