[Kids Creative Lab in Daikanyama]
At the Kids Creative Lab on May 24, we made a magical solar box that captures sunlight to generate electricity!
Perhaps thanks to the teru teru bozu we’d made the day before, the sun came out despite the rain forecast.
The secret to generating electricity is—believe it or not—an LED light bulb. While LED bulbs are
usually used for lighting, they can also be used to collect light and generate electricity!
In this project, we’ll make a device that produces sound using electricity generated by an LED.
Once it’s finished, let’s start collecting light right away—both inside and outside the room! When you point the solar box at light bulbs, projectors, flashlights, computers, various lights inside the room, or sunlight outside—and press your ear right up against it—what happens
? “Oh, it made a sound!” “It’s going ‘beep-beep’~” “It sounds like a song!”
Everyone had all sorts of reactions.
They looked very focused as they searched for different kinds of light—figuring out where the light was coming from and what kind of light made a sound—and listened intently to check for themselves, eagerly pointing out one spot after another where they heard a sound.
“It makes a sound near the vending machine!” “It made a sound when I pointed it at a car!”
When I asked the elementary school students who told me these things, “Why do you think that is?”, they shared their own thoughts, such as,
“Because there’s a lot of light gathered there” and “Because the light is reflecting.”
"So light can be heard, huh?"
The words of a child in the preschool class really stuck with me.
Light is something we see with our eyes.
But today, I had the children take part in a slightly mysterious experience where they searched for and sensed light with their ears.
