- Children’s Media Lab Vol. 9: “Children and Architecture”
We held the 9th edition of the Children’s Media Lab, titled “Children and Architecture.” Today’s guest was Taku Hibino, who has designed
more than 350 facilities for children, including kindergartens and daycare centers.
A preschool building with a retractable roof, where puddles form in the courtyard when it rains. A preschool building where children can play in the sandbox
indoors. A space where children can experience
sound and interact with one another. A space where children enjoy delicious meals through an
open kitchen and a self-service meal system.
Mr. Hibino says he doesn’t want to be called an “architect.” This is because he wants to use
architecture to design the entire environment in which children grow up.
Rather than emphasizing the architect’s individual style, he focuses on bringing the preschool’s own concept to life through design. His words—
“I don’t want the preschool to adapt to the building; I want to create a building that adapts to the preschool”—really resonated with me.
Mr. Hibino, whom I admire so much, thank you again today!
